Learning outcome: Analyse the impact of language changes
1. Presentation by teacher on the dominance of English and its impact on minority languages, including a case-study (e.g. Gaelic in Ireland, Maori in New Zealand), giving the historical background and the situation now in a particular country, plus the means used to save the minority language (e.g. government policies).
2. Students study texts presenting opposing opinions (assets of English as a world language VS negative effect of its dominance)- comparative analysis. Class discussion- personal opinions.
3. Assignments:
Small assignment (local perspective): Influence of English on Dutch advertising- find examples of this online/in newspapers/posters etc. and analyse the purpose behind using English, rather than Dutch. Consequent class discussion on the effect of English on the Dutch language.
Larger assignment (further oral work?- global perspective): Students allocated endangered language (in groups?) and asked to put together a proposal to save it from extinction (i.e. protective measures in education, media etc.).
